Researching the Functionality and Feasibility of the Math Learning Companion

Abstract

This paper presents research findings from Year 2 of a three-year development project to create and investigate the functionality and feasibility of the Math Learning Companion (MLC). The MLC consists of four primary components, two of which were studied extensively in Year 2: (1) the standards-based curriculum and (2) the electronic student support tools. Research was driven by these two research questions: (1) How functional and feasible is the MLC curriculum in classroom settings? And, (2) How does a small group of sixth-grade students with learning disabilities employ active electronic support tools (calculator, key term hyperlinks, key term dictionary, and embedded audio) when provided through an online mathematics intervention? Results support functionality and feasibility of the MLC in authentic classroom settings.
