Abstract

Algebra is considered the “gatekeeper” to higher education but middle-school students have reported low motivation and alienation to standard instructional practice. Yet, students in the “Net Generation” have a connection to technology. Technology is a ubiquitous part of students’ life and it can used in powerful pedagogically valuable ways to motivate and engage students in the mathematics classroom. Our approach to address this issue while enhancing teacher content knowledge was grounded in a model of professional development where mathematics content, pedagogy and technology were integrated with a focus on student learning.
