Breast Cancer Knowledge and Awareness Among High School and College Students in the Midwestern United States

Abstract

The prognosis of breast cancer detected early and treated is good with higher patient survival rates. Consequently, promoting breast cancer knowledge among high school and college students will cumulate in health habits that will result in early detection and regular use of effective screening methods later in their lives. In this study, a self-administered questionnaire was given to 355 high school and 132 college students in a Mid-Western area of US to assess their knowledge and awareness of breast cancer. Our study showed that both high school and college students lacked sufficient knowledge on breast cancer. Based on our findings, we recommend more breast cancer awareness programs targeting high school and college students.
