Distinctive Competencies for Sustainable Development

Abstract

Current society faces the challenge of sustainable development. Organisations and their professionals have to take op their responsibility and balance social, environmental and financial issues within a future and global perspective to make a positive contribution to current and future generations. In this study, by means of a systematic literature review a comprehensive list of competencies is composed necessary for professionals to meet the demands of sustainable development. Competencies are chosen as vehicle because they encompass integrated complexes of knowledge, skills and attitudes that enable successful task performance and problem solving with respect to sustainability problems, challenges and opportunities. Next step is to study whether these competencies actually underpin sustainable development and how these competencies can be developed in workplaces.
