Work-integrated learning is a promising learning form within organizations. It is often considered effective in over-coming the long-standing problem of training transfer. One particularly important source of work-oriented learning are experienced colleagues. However, it is often difficult to find colleagues with the required expertise, especially in larger and spatially distributed organizations. In this study, an expert finding system, a well established knowledge management tool, was used to overcome this problem. The study analyzes the conceptual development and implementation process of the expert-finding-system. It was conducted in the R&D department of an international biotechnological company with regional sites in USA, Germany, Switzerland and Australia.
