Abstract

Competence-based education is an international innovation in vocational education, which has consequences for the professional role of the teacher. Learning more and more takes place in social practice and teachers have to be enabled to guide students in the process of competence development towards becoming professionals in their domain. In this paper themes are identified by directors and human resource managers of vocational education institutions that are important for teachers to become successful in implementing competence-based education. Themes concern both ‘how’ themes (i.e. community learning) and ‘what’ themes (i.e. practical training) and results show that ‘how’ themes are considered as less important than ‘what’ themes. Considering the research agenda, they should be researched in close relationship.
