Experiences viewing and discussing videotapes of classroom lessons can help teachers become more knowledgeable about effective practice. One program that serves this purpose is a web-based, interactive and multimedia program, Case Studies of Reading Lessons (CSRL). The program consists of a series of case studies that elementary teachers have contributed; accompanying the interviews of teachers and videos of their lessons are questions that focus teachers’ attention on three major dimensions of instruction (e.g., purpose and design of the lesson, attention to student engagement and learning). The objective of this study is to investigate teachers’ responses to CSRL—the extent to which the program deepens their understanding of effective reading instruction and leads teachers’ to regard their own teaching practices analytically.
