Paper Summary

Holocaust Education: Global Forces Shaping Curricula Integration and Implementation

Fri, April 13, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: First Level, East Ballroom C

Abstract

The paper is a critical review of the scholarship on Holocaust education in elementary and secondary schools worldwide. Despite the growing body of work on a global scale, an exhaustive search through major academic databases by the authors revealed that, as of yet, no such critical review has been undertaken. Therefore this original research paper will focus specifically on the three main themes across the research literature: 1) The emergence of Holocaust education in (national) school curricula; 2) the relationship between Holocaust memorialization and education; and 3) the potential for Holocaust education to teach about xenophobia, racism and human rights more broadly.
