Abstract

Previous studies of the predictors of delayed college entry focus on information gathered in a student’s senior year. However, by the time a student is a senior, there is little time to introduce policies or programs that could help deter them from delaying their college enrollment, a decision that has a negative impact on educational attainment. This paper examines predictors identified in eighth and tenth grades and demonstrates that it is possible to accurately predict which students will delay prior to twelfth grade. This is significant from a policy standpoint and indicates that at-risk students can and should be identified, and policies implemented to assist them in making positive changes, thereby decreasing their risk for delayed enrollment.
