Abstract

The primary purpose of this study was to employ a quantitative approach to understanding Latina/o middle school students’ school experiences, behaviors, and attitudes that predict enrollment in advanced algebra coursework. Two widely used higher education surveys administered by UCLA’s Higher Education Research Institute; the Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP) Your First in Year College Survey (YFCY) and the Diverse Democracy Survey. Descriptive, exploratory factor analyses and a regression model that examined Latina/o middle school students’ current and anticipated school behaviors and attitudes, as well as which of these behaviors and attitudes were positive predictors of enrollment in more advanced algebra coursework were conducted. Policy and practice implications are discussed from a P-16 perspective.
