This systematic literature review focused only on published empirical studies of 1:1 laptop or computing settings conducted between 2000 and 2010 in P-12 schools. Findings suggest that 86% of the studies focused on 1:1 implementation outcomes, i.e., student outcomes or teacher outcomes as a result of laptop programs. 14% focused on models of implementation. Implementation studies suggest the importance of teacher beliefs and attitudes, and technological support and professional development in successful 1:1 implementation. Most outcome studies reported small increases in student performance, and student outcomes in specific areas like motivation and engagement, writing skills, and collaboration. Teacher outcomes suggest greater confidence, in addition to increases in technology proficiency, and movement towards more student-centered practices.
