Abstract

This study reports on a pilot project designed to enhance student-teachers’ ownership of learning in their career development through the use of e-portfolios. The research is informed by a three-part interactive framework for ownership of learning. The pilot was carried out in spring, 2011 at the Hong Kong Institute of Education. An eight-week career enhancement course was conducted in which student-teachers were required to construct e-portfolios using the Mahara e-portfolio platform. Post-course interviews were conducted with qualitative analysis of transcripts. Initial results suggest the students conceptualize e-portfolio value autonomously from institutional imperatives and place a high value on ICT flexibility and training for both themselves and for staff. Implications for institutions initiating or sustaining e-portfolio programs are discussed.
