Abstract

In this paper, the author critically analyzes different uses of “diversity” from various forms of literature about and issued by various STEM programs, initiatives and departments. The author calls into question the ambiguous use of “diversity” when applied within STEM in higher education. Furthermore, the author examines whether there is a connection between pervasive use of the generalized use of the term “diversity” and the extreme racial discrepancies seen in the STEM disciplines. The author urges for a better defined, more intentional and disaggregated use of the term with regard to racial and ethnic minority students as a means to improve the racial/ethnic disparity currently in postsecondary STEM education.
