Abstract

As increasingly complex bio-analytical research methods become more prevalent, students wishing to become researchers must be equipped with critical-thinking skills necessary for efficiently, effectively applying various analytical methods in experimental situations. In a newly developed elective course on basic bio-analytical research methods, we used a Studio Based Learning pedagogy treatment to test our ability to embed critical thinking into learning. The central Studio Based Learning techniques of propose-critique-iterate were used to design a series of laboratory experiments covering an array of topics including mycology, proteomics, chromatography, and spectroscopy. In addition to developing deeper analytical skills in students, the experimental course strengthened bio-analytical techniques. Written and oral communication skills of the students were also improved.
