Session Submission Type: Symposium
The empirical evidence is overwhelming that Black males are among one of the most vulnerable student populations in the United States. The most salient indicators of academic performance in K – 12 and post-secondary schools imply that Black boys are overrepresented in categories associated with failure and underrepresented in those traditionally associated with success. Panelists will share innovative pedagogical practices, interventions, and theoretical frameworks: useful for reshaping the perspectives used by practitioners to facilitate the positive social and intellectual development of Black male students. Findings from each paper presented will provide empirically supported recommendations for leveraging asset-based understandings of Black males and Black youth culture to better support the implementation of culturally responsive pedagogy.
