Abstract

Implementing the new Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and transitioning to aligned next-generation common assessments will be one of the most important and difficult challenges facing the State Assessment Consortia and their 44 state and District of Columbia members over the next four years. As part of the federal Race to the Top (RTTT) initiatives, states are attempting to put in place systemic reform strategies related to standards, curriculum, instruction, assessments and accountability. This session will examine the reform approaches and strategies being initiated by the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) and the SMARTER Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) and will analyze new advances and major impediments to successful implementation of these complex reform initiatives.
