Critical Race Theory: Methodological and Pedagogical Tools for Critical Race Theorists and Beyond

Abstract

Critical Race Theory (CRT) originates with legal Scholars of Color, who developed a framework to account for racism within law in order to articulate and eliminate all forms of oppression in society--which serves similar purposes in education. As critical race theorists, we are particularly interested in contributing to the existing critical race methodological and pedagogical toolkit. This symposium will highlight three unique contributions in methods and pedagogy that CRT can make in educational research. Each paper offers insights into a specific methodological and pedagogical tool critical race theorists and other scholars whose research underlie a social justice framework can utilize in their line of work. We name these tools critical race history, critical race discourse analysis, and critical race photovoice.
