Session Submission Summary

Blending Youth Participatory Action Research and Youth Organizing: Analyzing the Council of Youth Research

Mon, April 16, 8:15 to 10:15am, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: Second Level, East Room 12

Session Submission Type: Symposium

Abstract

This session explores the Council of Youth Research as a community of practice that positions urban youth as powerful civic agents through engaging them in youth participatory action research (YPAR) and transformative community action. This session will highlight the voices of high school student researchers, who will discuss their research with youth and community organizing groups and analyze the dialectic relationship between research and organizing. The students, teachers, and university researchers involved in program will explain the theoretical and practical impacts that their work has on new media pedagogy, civic engagement, and literacy learning. We will present this work as the starting point for a multi-site and multi-modal movement for educational justice led by young people.
