Session Submission Summary

Innovative Methods for Studying Children’s Self-Efficacy, Self-Regulation, and Self-Determination In and Out of School Settings

Fri, April 13, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Sheraton Wall Centre, Floor: Third Level, North Junior Ballroom D

Session Submission Type: Symposium

Abstract

Efforts to study motivation and self-regulation as dynamic and developing processes bound by personal, social and contextual variables demand expansion of methods beyond self-report questionnaires. The use of more varied and innovative methods is particularly relevant when children and marginalized populations are involved. The five projects in this symposium reflect efforts to study children’s expressions of self-efficacy, self-regulation, and self-determination across a spectrum of ages (14 months to 19 years) and contexts (home, school and alternative education and workplace settings), and using methods designed to represent these constructs through children’s own words and interactions. Methods include observations and interviews, video-stimulated recall tasks, and photo-elicitation. Interactive discussion among audience members and presenters will be structured to further consideration of methodological innovations.
