Session Submission Type: Roundtable Session
The objectives of this session are: 1) to introduce major teacher policies in three high-achieving East Asian countries—China, South Korea, and Japan to U.S. and international audiences, and 2) to empirically examine and evaluate these policies and draw implications for teacher policies and reforms in the U.S. and other countries. Four papers examined: 1) teacher license renewal policy in Japan, 2) teacher evaluation policy in South Korea, 3) teacher distribution policy in China, and 4) teacher award system in China. The author(s) of each paper conducted an empirical study to examine the social, cultural, and political contexts in which the new policy was developed, its implementation status, or its influence on teachers.
