Session Submission Type: Symposium
This symposium presents research and findings that examine game types and design decisions that influence learning, interaction, and play in game spaces. The symposium’s objective follows from the notion that games are “designed experiences” (Squire, 2006) in which every design decision shapes the “structures and contexts in which play takes place” (Salen & Zimmerman, 2004, p. 67) as well as the learning potential of the play experience. The session will foster a dialogue where the presenters, with the help of the discussant and audience, will explore the influence of game types and design decisions to better understand the impact of such decisions on learners/players in domains as diverse as history, mathematics, and language acquisition.
