Session Submission Summary

Reimagining Teacher Education Through University-Community Partnerships

Sat, April 14, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: First Level, West Room 116&117

Session Submission Type: Symposium

Abstract

Teacher education that focuses only on what is rather than also on what could be is a disservice to our teachers and their students. We need to re-imagine how we introduce novice teachers to expansive ways of thinking about education, especially to help them see that diversity – of perspectives, experiences, and linguistic and cultural backgrounds – is fundamental to learning. Towards this end, in this symposium, researchers from 4 universities will share, critique, and theorize their innovative approaches for preparing teachers through community partnerships located in out-of-school settings. We argue that carefully designed connections to out-of-school settings offer rich opportunities for novice teachers to become students and organizers of learning. We will also discuss what makes these partnerships successful and challenging.
