Session Submission Summary

The True Cost of Failed Policies: Research and Organizing for Increased Investment in Proven Reforms

Mon, April 16, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Sheraton Wall Centre, Floor: Third Level, South Pavilion Ballroom B

Session Submission Type: Workshop

Abstract

This workshop will examine how collaboration between researchers and youth organizing groups can elevate the need for investment in effective education policies even in times of fiscal crisis. Student leaders from Voices of Youth in Chicago Education (VOYCE) and Jim Freeman of the civil rights law organization Advancement Project will share the methodologies and findings of cost-analysis research being done on ineffective, harsh discipline policies, and reflect on how this research is being used to shift spending towards the research-based, supportive approaches too often seen as a low priority. Chair Dr. Charles Payne, researcher and former CPS Chief Education Officer, will lead attendees in reflection and dialogue on the implication of these collaborations to transform budget and revenue policy.
