Session Submission Type: Symposium
In this session we propose to extend Jenkins’ et al.’s (2006) conception of participatory cultures as authentic digital spaces for artistic production and civic engagement – to understanding participatory media spaces, designed learning environments that take advantage of the features of emergent spaces yet focus on specific learning and instructional goals. Our symposium will focus on various aspects of the relationship between digital media, creative production, and the design of learning environments. We present four complimentary perspectives on how young people learn to produce digital media, how we can assess the quality of youth-produced digital art, and the formal and informal learning environments that lend themselves to meaningful participation in “new literacies” (Lankshear & Knobel, 2003) practices.
