Abstract

This symposium will examine issues related to the welfare of students in rural schools from the perspective of three international contexts. Researchers from Australia, Canada and South Korea will describe their interrelated investigations into welfare issues. A uniting thread across all papers in this symposium is the centrality of student learning - a focus on students and their learning seems key to success across all settings. The first paper presents a framework for understanding welfare issues in successful Australian rural schools. The next two papers focus on specific educational and contextual aspects of this framework. The final paper examines the insights that arise from completing an informed comparison of student welfare issues in Australian and South Korean rural schools.
