The Critical Pedagogy in Mentoring: Planting the Seeds for Critical Consciousness and Transformation

Abstract

This panel highlights research that applies critical pedagogy to mentoring young people of color as done by urban teachers and immigrant parents. The mentors featured in these papers assist young people of color in navigating the tumultuous waters of the educational system. Through focusing on the mentor and mentee relationship, this panel expands on the importance of mentoring pedagogies rooted in social justice visions. The thread for these papers is that mentorship becomes part of the reciprocated struggle between the mentor and the mentee where self-actualization is a process of empowerment in the face of oppressive, racist institutions. These papers provide examples of how mentoring, through a critical pedagogical framework, is a liberatory and humanizing learning experience for both the mentees and mentors.
