Theorizing and Transforming Place in the Learning Sciences

Abstract
Situated learning (Lave & Wenger, 1991) has become a guiding theoretical construct within learning sciences research. Yet learning scientists have given little attention to the ways that learning is situated within particular places. The concept of place captures the diverse ways that people construct, experience, inhabit and transform particular cultural and institutional settings. Making place focal within the learning sciences requires we analyze the social and spatial configuration of access to valued educational opportunities and attend to how people construct places to contest dominant frames for meaning making. As the papers in this session illustrate, making place focal in accounts of learning illuminates spatial dimensions of inequity but also foregrounds new dilemmas related to protection of research participants and generalizability.
