Living Theory: Dramatization in Educational Psychology

Abstract

Investigating innovative methods used in an undergraduate educational psychology course can shed light on how to facilitate learning of theoretical concepts. Using drama not only helps students connect new learning to their own experiences, but transforms perspectives by bringing theory to life. Preliminary results indicate an ability to identify with the conflict or situation, generalize concepts to other courses, and apply to actual teaching contexts. Furthermore, students reported an interest in educational theory, an overall enjoyment of the strategies, and an appreciation for modeling constructivist approaches and innovative methods. Dramatic methods guide students in constructing knowledge by creating a richer understanding of concepts that can be applied to critical thinking and instructional decision making.
