Sat, April 14, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: First Level, East Ballroom C

Abstract

The findings of this study support the view that stronger school instructional environments and teacher effectiveness are related to differences in outcomes. First, teacher effects matter in describing achievement levels in math. Second, stronger perceptions about the school’s instructional environment were related to higher achievement outcomes. The study addresses the “black box” of school activity directed at improving the school’s learning environment by identifying sets of indicators that are related to classroom effectiveness in math. This provides a promising avenue through which school leadership can influence student outcomes by focusing on school improvement, including hiring and retaining quality teachers, and providing a focus on building teaching expertise in the classroom through teacher collaboration and professional development.
