Abstract

In New York City public high schools, there are intensive arts programs that may result in a student earning an Arts Endorsed Diploma. The present study examined the population of students earning Arts Endorsed Diplomas and used propensity score matching to estimate the impact of the arts program on student achievement. Results indicated that students in arts programs and their matched peers were higher performing than other students in the cohort. Subgroup analyses revealed that arts programs were particularly beneficial for students who had lower levels of academic achievement in middle school.
