One of the most common formats for multimedia learning is a combination of static visuals and text (Crooks, White, Srinivasan, & Wang, 2008). The placement of images in relation to the text is very important for learning in a computer-based environment. This study investigated the effects of contiguity between corresponding map features and facts presented as related text or text and audio on learning. Participants were randomly assigned to two levels of fact location (rollover vs. hypertext) were crossed with two levels of modality (audio vs. dual modality: audio and text) to create a 2 x 2 factorial design. It was concluded that online instruction containing maps should employ the computer's capability to embed feature-related facts within related map features.
