This two-year inquiry explores transformational changes underway through the research informed leadership actions of the superintendents’ association in the Canadian province of Alberta. Though the Alberta educational system is consistently recognized as one of the world’s top performers on credible international measures, the Minister of Education has signaled a need for transformational change. Complexity Leadership Theory’s three leadership constructions – adaptive, enabling and administrative leadership – are used to frame this study. Evidence indicates that the superintendents’ association is capturing the interest of educational leaders, inducing a willingness to challenge some core elements of Alberta’s education system, attracting resources from stakeholders and establishing the foundations of transformational change. Successes and challenges are identified. Proposed next steps next steps are identified.
