Chinese Children’s Literacy Learning in Different Environments in Canada

Abstract

Canada is a multilingual and multicultural country with a large number of immigrants. People's Republic China has been the top one immigration sources country since 1998 (CIC, 2010) while most research studies have still focused on English and French language learning and teaching. This paper takes socio-cultural perspective in literacy research which views literacy as a social practice.It examines primary grade Chinese children's bilingual literacy learning in different literacy learning environments (home, school and community). A qualitative case study was conducted to understand Chinese children's bilingual literacy learning through interviews, observations and literacy work sample collections. All data were coded and analyzed thematically. The findings show that different literacy environments played different roles in children's bilingual literacy learning.
