Postsecondary research has documented the low success levels of developmental education and the uneven instructional quality in these classrooms. To identify promising approaches for developmental educators, this paper reports on case studies of the instructional practices of five faculty members (2 in English, 3 in mathematics) with historically high pass rates with students with lower than average placement test scores. Data analysis was based on written, classroom, and video artifacts from an online community and knowledge base to promote practitioner sharing and reflection. Researchers analyzed 59 lessons that represented the predominant pedagogical techniques of these faculty members. Study provides descriptive data on the learning goals, instructional practices, assessment evidence, and student engagement levels in the classrooms of successful developmental educators.
