Session Submission Type: Symposium
This symposium provides an overview of a large-scale study examining the role of educative curriculum materials and teachers’ practices in meeting the needs of English language learners (ELL) within the Seeds of Science Roots of Reading integrated science/literacy curriculum. Initial analysis indicates that many teachers with access to the educative curriculum materials increased their use of instructional strategies designed to support the ELLs in their classrooms, while teachers using the same curriculum without educative features did not. Further, for some classrooms, teachers’ use of ELL strategies related to gains in students’ science knowledge and vocabulary.
