Session Submission Type: Symposium
Mathematics learning does not stop (or begin) when the school bell rings. This session looks at the kinds of teaching and learning that occur around mathematics when not constrained by traditional “schooling.” Drawing upon sociocultural and sociopolitical theories, presenters offer perspectives on mathematics we rarely see: Latina mothers working with their children; undergraduate and graduate students playing games with adolescents in a public library or with young children in an after school club; and community members becoming educators that blur the school/home boundary. These presentations highlight hidden resources and complexity in the role of the mathematical learner/educator and remind us it is not enough to “know” mathematics as defined by school.
