Abstract

Education can be a gateway to a better life and mathematics has become the catalyst for determining much of that opportunity, yet for many children that door continues to remain closed. The reality of the achievement gap between affluent white children and certain minority students and those who come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds is staggering. But there is hope – when working with traditionally underserved students in the crucial subject of mathematics, research has shown that there are specific attributes that significantly impact student learning: passionate teachers in safe and lively environments with active learning of a rigorous curriculum that deeply connects to students and their lives – has a tremendous influence on what students learn and how much they grow.
