Islam and Evolutionary Science: A Comparative Study of Evolution in Science Curricula From Muslim Countries

Abstract

This study seeks to inform science education practitioners and researchers in the West about the status and treatment of evolutionary science in secondary education in various Muslim societies including Egypt, Malaysia, Turkey, and Pakistan. Evolutionary concepts and mechanisms are presented including the theory of natural selection in all curricula. Pakistani Biology curriculum presents scientific models and religious perspectives on the origin and evolution of life. Strikingly, the interpretations of the scripture are compatible with evolution. Although religious ideas are not discussed, some creationist influences were noticed in the Turkish curriculum. This comparative analysis informs our growing understanding of the diversity of scientific and religious perspectives on evolutionary science that Muslim students and teachers are exposed to in formal science education.
