Civil, Civic, and Political Efficacy of Students

Abstract

This paper discusses the results of a qualitative study into the civil, civic and political efficacy of thirty students, aged 16 to 20, from four different schools in the Netherlands. Data on students’ efficacy were collected through structured interviews. A thematic analysis was conducted. Four typologies were distinguished: the overall efficacy type, the civil and political efficacy type, the civil efficacy type, and the passive efficacy type. As the typologies reveal, a strong relation was found between students’ efficacy and their citizenship philosophy.
