Student Mobility and School Disorder in Urban Public Schools

Sun, April 15, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Sheraton Wall Centre, Floor: Third Level, South Blue Whale

Abstract

Analyzing 1,638 samples of U.S. urban public schools, we found that 275,156 mobile students (M = 167.98 and S.D. = 200.19) during 2007-08 school year. ANOVA results showed that percentage of mobile students is higher in poor schools, high school (than elementary and middle school), schools with more ethnic minority students, and larger schools. Multiple regression analysis showed that percentage of mobile students is significantly and positively associated with six types of school disorder after controlling for school characteristics: student racial/ethnic tensions, student bullying, student sexual harassment of other students, widespread disorder in classrooms, student verbal abuse of teachers, and student acts of disrespect for teachers other than verbal abuse.
