Relationships Matter: Illuminating the Voices of Teachers Who Go the Extra Mile

Abstract

Middle school teachers who work with students as extracurricular advisors are a very distinctive and unique group of teachers. Students lodged between elementary and high schools can be at a greater risk of losing interest in school and feeling less a part of the school community during this crucial developmental time period. Teachers who work as extracurricular advisors may bring a new point of view to the educational field to shed light into ways schools can become more viable for students, teachers and the educational community. The ultimate purpose of this research project is to use the data gathered to improve the lives of k-12 teachers, and students and the learning communities they form.
