A Cross-Cultural Study of Mathematics Teaching Methods in Middle Schools

• In Event: Extending Beyond the Achievement Gap: Teachers’ Connections to Psychosocial Factors in STEM Education

Abstract

Using an international database, TIMSS, this study analyzes and compares seven mathematics teaching methods in middle schools of fifteen countries. In each country, the study also explores the relationships of the teaching methods with teachers’ characteristics and school backgrounds, and reveals impacts of the teaching methods on students’ interests and achievements in mathematics study. The findings provide meaningful information for mathematics teachers’ instruction strategies, professional training and cross-cultural research.
