Sat, April 14, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Sheraton Wall Centre, Floor: Third Level, South Blue Whale

Abstract

While there has been substantial research on the acculturation of physical education teacher-coaches in secondary schools, few studies exist with regard to the biographies of teacher-coaches in other content areas. The purpose of this survey research is to examine the background experiences, motivations, and perceptions of core content area (i.e., English/language arts, foreign language, mathematics, science, and social sciences) pre-service teachers in order to better understand how certain factors might influence their willingness to coach an athletic team during their first year of teaching and beyond. Viewed through the framework of occupational socialization, this study will highlight the acculturative processes of future teachers in hopes of shedding light on their teaching/coaching orientations as well as potential career contingencies.
