Exploring Trends in Evaluation Training in Leadership Preparation Programs

Abstract

Despite the inherent link between education and evaluation, literature reveals scant evidence of how prevalent evaluation training is in preparation programs. This is noteworthy in the current climate favoring accountability and decentralized school leadership. This exploratory study used web-based searches of programs of study, course titles, and catalog descriptions. Content and frequency analyses of 132 doctoral programs for PK-12 practitioners found single courses in evaluation held a minor role in educational leadership doctoral training. Most were not core courses, but were among a list of optional requirements or elective courses. Course topics most often focused on (a) broad overviews of evaluation approaches and methods; (b) practical applications; and (c) student field-based study.
