Investigating the Impact of Sustainability-Focused Courses in Higher Education: What Seems to Work?

Abstract

This study investigated the impact of courses offered at the University of British Columbia (UBC) that teach about sustainability, and students’ translation of the concept of “sustainability” into awareness, understanding and action. The study employed a qualitative research approach using focus groups and one-on-one interviews. Findings indicate several factors play a role in students’ understanding and integration of knowledge. Students preferred trans and interdisciplinary approaches, and project-based and group-learning environments were found to support learning. Motivation to engage in sustainability activities appeared to be advanced through philosophical discussions of sustainability-related issues. Findings from this study will inform course design and the development of a comprehensive and cohesive sustainability curricula at UBC and potentially other institutions of higher education.
