Developing Culturally Responsive Teachers Through International Student Teaching

Abstract

U.S. student demographic patterns continue to be characterized by diverse ethnic and racial backgrounds other than white—a phenomenon of exceptional momentum that presents significant culturally-related challenges. Future teachers must be prepared to effectively serve our burgeoning student population through culturally responsive practices that enhance their learning and academic outcomes. Teacher Education programs increasingly promote student teaching in international settings as a substantive step to develop teachers who embody culturally responsive pedagogy. The presentation focuses on: (a) research on the development of culturally responsive instructional qualities and behaviors of two cohorts of pre-service teachers through their international student teaching experiences in Ecuador; and (b) the role of Ecuadorian collaborating teachers on the cultural, professional and character development of student teachers.
