Students’ Perspectives on the Effectiveness of Case Studies in Preparing Them to Teach

Abstract

This study focuses on the perspectives of graduate students enrolled in a pre-service teacher education program who were exposed to case studies in educational psychology courses. It considers how students view the value of cases both in their studies as graduate education students and in their future roles as K-12 teachers. Both qualitative and quantitative data are presented regarding students’ perspectives on the effectiveness of cases. Students’ perspectives are compared with the theoretical intent of cases and the expected learning outcome of teacher educators using cases to show correlating or opposing views.
