Abstract

Mathematics Teacher Transformation Institutes (MTTI) aims to develop math teachers’ leadership capacities across a number of domains. The National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics (2008) postulated that the practice of leadership activities leads to leadership growth through three stages of development: leadership of self (Stage 1), leadership of others (Stage 2), and leadership in the extended community (Stage 3). This study compared MMTI self-reported leadership roles before and after they had completed the formal leadership component of MTTI. This component seemed to encourage participants who were initially the least active leaders to develop their leadership capacities. Support for the three-stage model of leadership was found by comparing limited, medium, and high leadership groups across six areas of teacher-leadership activity.
