Domestic Thinkeries: Deschooling Examples From Duden and Illich

Abstract

Ivan Illich once described the Centro Intercultural de Documentación (CIDOC) as his “thinkery.” He then described the domestic hospitality and friendship centered around the domicile of Barbara Duden. In this paper, I use both of these conceptualizations of living/learning as models for deschooling, a combination of domestic hospitality and academic thinkeries. In addition to analyzing the characteristics of both models, I also synthesize and apply these two approaches in the narrative anecdotes of our own family’s deschooling, from toddling to post-doctoral learning.
