Instructional Design and Design Research: Where Are We, and Where Are We Headed?

Abstract

This examines definitions of instructional design and research within the field of Instructional Technology, noting differences in conceptualization of design and research held by other design fields. With this broader perspective, a conceptual map of the ways that research is used in instructional design will be presented. Research about design, research for design, research into design, research through design, and learning from design will be compared within a framework of theory and practice, as well as processes and products, suggesting ways that research and practice can be better integrated, and extending the notion of instructional design research beyond the classic scholarly definitions. Finally, the implications of this new framework for research for the education of instructional designers will be discussed.
